Wouldn't You Think By Now

THE STORY

There's a bit of a long story to this track  but here goes. Recently, a great friend of mine sent me a track that he rediscovered after having all of his photos, videos and tapes professionally digitized. I hadn't noticed a title but I clicked "play" anyway. I recognized the intro immediately though I had no memory of ever recording it. Then the vocal came in and I was shocked. It was the magnificent John Blaylock who has since passed.

Then it all came back to me. Back in the mid 90s, when Efren and I lived in New York, I was part of the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop as a composer/lyricist. This is the very first song I wrote for that workshop. The experience was incredible, thanks largely to the leadership and talent of Skip Kennon who ran the "freshman class" at that time. What an incredible "teacher" - encouraging, nurturing and a brilliant composer as well.

Years later, after moving back to LA, Johnny and I recorded a quick piano-vocal at The Bakery, a terrific recording studio in Burbank that we all loved and frequented often. Sadly, the track is in pretty rough shape after all this time. I guess my friend must have had it on a cassette, and strangely, I can't find any copies at all. Despite the warbled piano and some distorted vocals, Johnny's voice is so glorious that I felt I had to share. And the song itself  really holds a special place in my heart.

I cleaned up the track as best I could, grabbed some AI and stock footage to make a video and hopefully make it a little more interesting to experience. I do hope you enjoy. In honor of the one and only John Blaylock, who left us way too soon, here's WOULDN'T YOU THINK I'D KNOW, by yours truly.
